Anthony Mithen, owner of Rosemont Stud in Victoria, is hoping the second crop of Australian-bred yearlings by subfertile stallion Starspangledbanner prove popular at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale this week.
The four-time Group 1 winner has a select crop of 20 yearlings on the ground this year, with five lots set to sell this week, three of whom are consigned by Rosemont Stud, including a half-brother (lot 370) to top-class South African sprinter Alboran Sea.
Mithen believes Starspangledbanner has the right profile to be a success on the Gold Coast this week.
“This is effectively his second crop of Australian yearlings after a gap year when he returned to the racecourse and they’ve been popular,” said Mithen. “That’s because they have the attributes to suit everyone here.
“Starspangledbanner is the archetypal sire for this sale. Trainers like him because he can produce fast, precocious types and syndicators love him because he’s such an easy sell, as he’s a proven source of winners who gets two-year-olds. There aren’t many of his stock around either, which is another unique selling point.”
Mithen, who owns a share in Starspangledbanner, added: “We own more than half of the yearlings he has this year and we want to spread them around all the sales to give him as much exposure as possible.”
Starspangledbanner left Rosemont Stud for Coolmore’s Castlehyde Stud on December 13 after a successful breeding season in Australia.
“He covered at a fee of A$44,000 last year and had a success rate of 58 per cent, with 46 mares scanned in foal, which is good,” said Mithen. “His oldest crop in Australia are three and he has around 30 running for him this year. Hopefully there are a couple of good ones on the horizon.
“He’s back in Ireland now, but he’ll definitely be back in Australia for the southern hemisphere breeding season. I don’t know if it will be with me or Coolmore. Whatever happens, I’ll keep breeding to him.”
Starspangledbanner has supplied five winners from 15 winners in Australia this season. His leading earner is the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Mr Individual.
He has made a significant impact with his European runners, headed by Prix Morny winner The Wow Signal.
Rosemont Stud has a couple of Starspangledbanner yearlings in the draft as well as some other yearlings we are presenting.
