Victorian thoroughbred nursery Rosemont Stud has acquired an interest in exciting New Zealand 3YO Volkstok’n’barrell (Tavistock-Volkster, by Volksraad), reports theinformant.co.nz.
The son of Cambridge Stud sire Tavistock was installed as equal favourite for the Gr1 New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie on 28 February after scoring a brilliant 4.5-length win in the Gr3 Bonecrusher Stakes in September.
Volkstok’n’barrell is set to resume at Ellerslie on Saturday in the Super Fence 3YO (1300m) before following a path to the Derby that is likely to take in the Gr2 Great Northern Guineas, the Listed Karaka Mile and the Gr2 Avondale Guineas.
“He is racing first up over 1300m this weekend where he will be vulnerable but we’ve got to start somewhere,” trainer Donna Logan told Sky Sports Radio yesterday.
“He is still very green and has a lot to learn. The Tavistock stock have been very forward in the three-year-old racing here in New Zealand at this stage.”
She added, “He has an exceptional turn of foot and is pretty untapped at this stage. We are very, very happy with what he has shown us to date.”
