Having proven his worth on the world stage, highlighted by his 2010 victory in the Group One Golden Jubilee (replay below) during the Royal Ascot carnival, Starspangledbanner’s first crop of European youngsters have hit the ground running with four individual winners from only six runners.
Remaining unbeaten, the John Quinn-trained, Al Shaqab Racing-owned The Wow Signal proved too classy for his rivals on the first day of the 2014 Royal Ascot carnival, powering away to win the Group Two Coventry Stakes.
Ridden a treat by leading jockey Frankie Dettori, the colt won the 1200m contest by one-and-three-quarters lengths.
A look back through historical records of the race reveals some pretty smart horses who went onto perform at the elite level including War Command, Dawn Approach, Power, Canford Cliffs, Henrythenavigator, Statue Of Liberty, Fasliyev and Royal Applause.
Fingers cross The Wow Signal can continue on his upward spiral for Starspangledbanner, who will cover his third Australian book of mares, and second since relocating to Rosemont Sud.
“He has come and beaten the best colts available today and he has been up there all the way, he wasn’t held up to run a race he was right there on the speed,” said John Quinn.
“I think he deserves a lot of credit. He didn’t just come from out of the pack he was there all the time. He could have capitulated but at the line he was going away.”
Starspangledbanner will be represented by two-year-old filly Anthem Alexander as one of the favoured runners in tonight’s Group Two Queen Mary Stakes over 1000m.
