Secured by Astute Bloodstock on behalf of Rosemont Stud at the 2012 Arqana Breeding Stock Sale in December, lot 81, a High Chaparral colt out of the Pivotal mare Silver Haze, a half-sister to the Lloyd Williams-owned German-bred Seville (left), is one of the six-strong team for the successful owner in this year’s Group One Melbourne Cup.

As you can see from the pedigree when the foal (pictured below) was secured for €80,000 by clicking here, Seville was only Group One placed at that stage, having finished second in the Racing Post Trophy as a two-year-old behind Casamento (Ire) and then in the Irish Derby to Treasure Beach (GB)) and to Meandre (Fr) in the Grand Prix de Paris as a three-year-old.

With form around some of the world’s best in Sea Moon (GB), Al Kazeem (GB), Masked Marvel (GB), Brown Panther (GB) and Reliable Man (GB), Seville took a few runs in Australia to show his form, but once he reached the 2000m of the 2012 Group One Turnbull Stakes he finished a narrow runner-up to his stable mate Green Moon (Ire) who went on to win the Group One Melbourne Cup a few starts later.

Heading for a spell after that effort, it was not until the end of August in 2013 that he stepped out again.

With three ok performances, he once again stepped up to a more suitable distance, this time the 2400m of the Group One Metropolitan Handicap at Royal Randwick where he defeated Julienas (Ire) by a half-length.

With the Group One victory, the champagne corks were popping at Rosemont Stud as their colt had tongues wagging in Europe with the way he had improved since his early days.

A pedigree that contains numerous stakes winners including Group Two winners Daneskaya, Six Sense, Group Three winner Silverskaya and the Listed winners Quartz, Murano and Mumtaz, Seville is clearly the star of the pedigree – so far at least – fingers crossed that our colt comes out and can add some black type to the already impressive pedigree!
