Impressive trial win for Volkstok'n'barrell

Three-time Group One winner Volkstok’n’barrell warmed up for his latest campaign with a strong trial win at his home track of Ruakaka this afternoon.

With Leith Innes in the saddle, the Tavistock gelding came from behind with a big late run and scored by two and a half lengths. He stopped the clock at 59.79 seconds for the 1000 metres.

“He went super,” co-trainer and part-owner Chris Gibbs told www.theinformant.co.nz. “He was as fat as a pig and he paraded like a two-year-old, bucking and carrying on, but he won very well. He came from behind and went straight past them, then cruised to the line. We were really happy with that.

“Leith said he wanted to try to hold on to the colours! He offered to wash them for us. I’m not sure how Vinnie (Colgan) will feel about that.”

The winner of eight of his 22 starts and more than $1.1 million in prize-money, Volkstok’n’barrell hasn’t raced since his three-start Queensland winter campaign that included a third in the Gr. 2 Hollindale Stakes and a fourth in the Gr. 1 Doomben Cup.

Depending on weather and track conditions, Volkstok’n’barrell will resume in the Gr. 3 Lion Red Plate over 1215 metres at Rotorua on October 15.

“At this stage he’s on track for that, but we’ll be guided by the weather,” Gibbs said. “It can get quite heavy at Rotorua and we may not want to risk him if it does. But if there’s some good weather between now and then it might not be too bad.”
