Rosemont Stud graduate Santa Ana Lane Wins Group 3 Zeditave Stakes

Underdone and sweating up in the yard, the Lee and Anthony Freedman trained Santa Ana Lane was expected to need the run in the Group III MRC Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, but emerged triumphant.

First up from a spell in the 1200 metre sprint, having not been seen since finishing fourth to Mahuta in a Listed race at Flemington back in October, Santa Ana Lane did best in a thrilling three way finish to snatch a narrow short half head win for Ben Melham.

"The boys have always had a high opinion of him,” he said.

Lee Freedman was pleasantly surprised with the win of Santa Ana Lane, who is targeting races at The Championships in Sydney before ultimately heading to Brisbane for the Winter Carnival.

"I thought he was a bit underdone and then he sweated up in the yard, so he could be a very good horse as he has a lot of improvement in him,” Freedman said.

Santa Ana Lane was an $80,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the draft of Rosemont Stud for Flemington Bloodstock and has the promising record of three wins from four starts with prizemoney of $123,450.

Bred by Patinack Farm he is the first winner for metropolitan winning Fastnet Rock mare Fast Fleet, a half-sister to Group III winner Blimey O’Reilly and stakes-winner Flag Officer.

Fast Fleet produced a filly by Kuroshio last spring and was then covered by Toorak Toff.

Her current yearling, a filly by Rosemont Stud's [Toorak Toff] will be offered as Lot 3 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale on Sunday by Eliza Park International.

Santa Ana Lane is the first Australian stakes-winner for Shamardal’s Group I winning son Lope de Vega and his 13th overall.
