There are countless stories of the good fortune enjoyed by breeders that have bought wisely from Darley reductions of breeding and racing stock in Australia and here is another.

Unbeaten Lonhro colt Sweynesse stamped himself as a rising star for Godolphin when the John O'Shea trained three year-old powered to victory in the Group III Spring Stakes at Newcastle on Wednesday.

The dashing dark brown surged late to win and gives every indication that he will run further with the Group I ATC Spring Champion Stakes his immediate goal.

Sweynesse is the fourth foal, but first winner for imported Singspiel mare Swansea (IRE), who won three minor races up to 2400 metres in Australia for Darley when trained by the late Guy Walter.

A grand-daughter of stakes-winning Secretariat mare Fantastic Ways from a big American Black Type family, Swansea was sent to the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale earlier this year by Darley where she was picked up by Rosemont Stud for $55,000 in foal to Commands.

She has since produced a very nice filly from that mating and is actually in New Zealand at Waikato Stud.

"We do a bit with Mark Chittick and have a couple of mares over there with him," said Anthony Mithen of Rosemont Stud.

"We sent Swansea over there to go to Ocean Park, but you can assume she will go to Savabeel next year with the Zabeel/ Singspiel cross working not only with Sweynesse but Eclair Big Bang as well."

If Sweynesse can progress further as seems likely, Swansea is going to be looking like a very good investment indeed.
